The Type Riders II
Set Your Word In Motion – a celebration of YOUR word
Obermann Center, 111 Church Street
Saturday July 19, 2:00 to 4:00 pm
The Obermann Center for Advanced Studies welcomes poets Maya Stein and Amy Tingle, aka The Typeriders, for an afternoon celebration on Saturday, July 19. The two women are riding a tandem bicycle from Colorado to Wisconsin and stopping along the way to type poems – in tandem, of course! They are also dedicating Little Free Libraries, including one at 111 Church Street. In their honor, the Obermann Center is hosting a festival of words, "Set Your Word In Motion."
During the two–hour open house event, guests are invited to bring a word for Stein and Tingle to wordsmith, inscribed in body paint by calligrapher Cheryl Jacobsen, and animated through writing exercises. Throughout the two hours, there will be performances by spoken word artists Kate Krohn, KT Hawbecker, Zora Hurst, Maggie Conroy, and Lauren Haldeman.
Ongoing during the open house, guests (re)discover the typed word in a screened–in–porch full of typewriters. Round robin Scrabble games will be set up in the Obermann Library, and there will be Word Twister on the lawn for younger and more limber guests. The Antelope Lending Library will also pull up their mobile library to join the festivities and offer several story time sessions.
The Obermann Center, located at 111 Church Street, is a hub for collaborative, interdisciplinary research and creative work at the University of Iowa.
